Listeners, and the readers, of tomorrow will perhaps wonder why for several years the International Society for Social Defense proposed to award a medal in the effigy of the great Cesare Beccaria.

The International Society for Social Defense and for a humanistic criminal policy
The International Society for Social Defense is created in 1947 on the rubble of World War II, about a Europe in ruins, with millions of military and civilian deaths, of people killed, of people suffering from hunger. Thousands of young people without families dedicated themselves to robbery. One hundred thousand between Rome and Milan, just as many in and around Berlin. All over the world the social disorganization generated by the War sowed the same effects. The criminality increased everywhere, especially in those countries in which the principle of "thou shalt not kill" had been violated. Crime represented more than a justice problem, a social issue, and the pain, to make sense, should be oriented towards what we now call resocialization.
